Crowns and Bridges
Crowns and bridges have been staples of dental restoration for years; however, the technology used to make these restorations has improved considerably. Older dental restorations can often be identified by a dark line present right next to the gum. Modern crowns and bridges can now be created using materials that don’t leave any identifiable marks at all to give you a beautiful, flawless smile.
Dental Crowns
Dental crowns can be used in a number of situations. Some of the most common include:
- Repair of a broken or cracked tooth
- Strengthening a tooth that has had root canal therapy performed on it
- Covering a tooth that has been damaged by decay
- Cosmetic improvement of a tooth that is malformed or discolored
Crowns are also often used in dental implant restoration, an innovative process in which the crown is fixed to a titanium post that is implanted in place of a missing tooth. The crown, which is created to be indistinguishable from your own natural teeth, blends in and gives you a complete, healthy smile.
To place a crown, your tooth is first filed and shaped to create an anchor for the crown. This also creates room for the crown to fit neatly and securely among the rest of your teeth. Once this is done, impressions are taken that are then sent to the dental lab we trust to make your dental restorations. When the crown returns from the lab, you return to our office, and we permanently cement the crown in place.
Dental Bridges
Dental bridges are similar to dental crowns, except they are used to replace one or more teeth that are missing. Bridges are fixed in place using dental crowns, which are placed on the teeth that are on either side of the missing tooth or teeth. If you are missing multiple teeth, you may also opt to have your bridge fixed to dental implants.
Bridges provide a permanent alternative to dentures and partials. You don’t need to remove them for cleaning and other care, and you never have to worry about them slipping at just the wrong moment. Thanks to today’s technology, nobody will ever need to know you have had restorative dental work done.
As with crowns, your bridges will be created by a dental lab we trust. The crowns used to secure the bridge will be made at the same time; as soon as your restorations are ready, you can go home with your new, complete smile.
Caring for Crowns and Bridges
Crowns and bridges become a permanent part of your mouth and are cared for in the same way you would for your own natural teeth.
